چکیده

This study presents acoustic and electromagnetic articulometry (EMA) data for the vowel /i/ in pre-boundary position in French. The boundaries examined are the Utterance, the Intonational phrase, the Accentual phrase, the Word and the Syllable. Our results show that although durational effects of prosodic boundary are still very strong, the effects on supralaryngeal articulation and on spectral characteristics are not as clear as those for the vowel /a/ reported in our previous work (Tabain, 2003a, 2003b). For instance, no effects are observed on the jaw or on F1 or F2. However, differing effects observed on tongue body articulation for male and female speakers together with the same effect on F3 for all speakers suggest that speakers aim for an acoustic/auditory target rather than an articulatory target when producing /i/ at stronger boundaries. These articulatory and acoustic results are argued to reflect featural enhancement of /i/ in French at stronger boundaries, since French has a particularly crowded vowel space in the high front region.

Interrelationship between vocal effort and vocal tract acoustics: a pilot study

How and why do vocal tract resonances and articulation change when shouting? Vocal tract resonances R1 and R2, Open quotient, Fundamental frequency, voice intensity, larynx height, lip aperture and spreading were simultaneously recorded for a female native speaker of French, on 7 French vowels and for 3 different conditions of increasing vocal effort: “normally” (S1), when keeping a pitch const...

Objectives: The present research aims to study the normal development of Percentage of Consonant Correct (PCC) in Kurdish-speaking children, with Middle Kurmanji-Mukryani Dialect as an Articulation Competency Index (ACI). PCC was examined in terms of the manner of articulation and position of sound in the word.  Methods: In this descriptoanalytical cross-sectional study, 120 Kurdish-speak...

Interacting effects of syllable and phrase position on consonant articulation.

The complexities of how prosodic structure, both at the phrasal and syllable levels, shapes speech production have begun to be illuminated through studies of articulatory behavior. The present study contributes to an understanding of prosodic signatures on articulation by examining the joint effects of phrasal and syllable position on the production of consonants. Articulatory kinematic data we...

Effects of contrastive focal accent on linguopalatal articulation and coarticulation in the French [kskl] cluster

This paper investigates the effects of contrastive focal accent placement on lingual articulation and coarticulation of French [kskl] clusters in word-medial position. The EPG results show that (i) this type of accent does not systematically increase the amplitude, but the duration of linguopalatal constrictions (particularly their release); (ii) i t directly lengthens the temporal interval bet...
